We are Tanya and Simon – a couple from Heidelberg, Germany. After we finished our PhD, we travelled Europe and Africa by bicycle (May 2017 – March 2019), while also combining our passion for climbing.

I am a born and bred Saffa (South African) but have also changed and adapted from living around the world (e.g. Canada, England and Germany). I fell in love with beautiful Heidelberg in Germany, and Simon, while doing my PhD in physics at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics. I enjoy climbing and am a nature and wildlife enthusiast! I also love being immersed in other cultures – their colours, flavours and atmosphere… Living a different way of life always comes with new life lessons.

I was born in Germany and grew up in the small town of Aalen in south Germany. After high school (Abitur), I moved to Heidelberg to study physics, which I finished in 2012 with a diploma. During my studies I spend one year in Canada at the McMaster University in Hamilton. From 2012 to 2016, I did a PhD in Astronomy at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, also in Heidelberg. Besides Astronomy, I am passionate about rock climbing, which I started around 2007. I have a coaching license (Trainer C and B ‘Sportklettern’) and I train a youth group at the DAV Heidelberg (‘Deutscher Alpen Verein’).
